By the time Douglas was nine years old, she had already made up her mind that she wanted to participate in the Olympics. After five years, she made a decision to move from Virginia to Iowa to learn from well-known coach Liang Chow and sacrifice her family life. It was not long before she won the title of world champion at the age of sixteen.
