Rio de Janeiro, Aug 9 (IANS) Japan wom the gold medal in men's team gymnastics at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, dethroning China, which had won the event in Beijing in 2008 and in London in 2012.
The Japanese, who amassed a total of 274,094 points, mounted a memorable drive on Monday, surpassing Russia, which had been out in front for the first four rounds but ended up taking the silver with 271,453 points, just barely edging out China, which had to settle for the bronze with 271,122 points, reports Efe.
Japan's male gymnastic team thus adds the team Olympic gold medal to the world title they won in 2015, putting a definitive end to the recent overwhelming - albeit temporary - Chinese dominance in the composite event.
The victory also fulfills the dream of Kohei Uchimura, the individual gymnastics champion in London in 2012 and six-time world champ, who had declared on several occasions his obsession with adding the team event to his gold medal collection.
