23-year-old Dipa Karmakar has qualified for the final of the Women’s Vault in the Artistic Gymnastics final to be held on 14 August. She has finished the qualification stage at eighth spot in this apparatus, helped by her usually prodigious score on the Produnova, the ‘Death Vault’.
In the four rotations, Dipa’s scores were Vault (14.850), Uneven Bars (11.666), Balance beam (12.866), Floor (12.033). She ended up with an average score of 51.665 and was placed at 28th overall. While a qualification for the final in the other categories eluded her by a fair distance, she has managed to finish among the best in her pet event, the Vault.
A score of 14.850 was just enough for Dipa to sneak through to the last 8. She achieved a score of 15.100 on the Produnova for her first vault, despite an execution that was not her best ever. She enjoyed a deep landing, but it was lower than we have seen it before. For her second vault, she opted for the Tsuk double full twist with a step to the side, something which got her a score of 14.600.
She was in 6th position at the end of the Subdivision 3 routines, of which she was a part. She had to wait a few more tense hours for confirmation of whether she was indeed going through, as the remaining gymnasts tried to overtake her score of 14.850 on the Vault. Simone Billes qualified from Subdivision 4 with an insane vault where she achieved almost a perfect 10 for execution.
Shallon Olsen of Canada was the only gymnast to make it into the top 8 from the last subdivision, thus ensuring that Dipa’s 14.850 finished among the best in this category.
The final is scheduled to be held on August 14, and is expected to start at 11 pm (IST).
