Sunisa Lee, also known as Suni Lee, who was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on March 9, 2003, is the first Hmong-American Olympian. She etched her name in history books by being the first woman with Asian ancestry to clinch gold in the Olympic all-around discipline. She began her formal gymnastics training at the tender age of six at the Midwest Gymnastics Centre in Little Canada, Minnesota.
She has been accomplishing remarkable feats since she was just seven years old. She was qualified for the elite program that made her eligible to represent the US in international competitions at just 11 years of age. Her international debut was at the 2016 Gymnix International Junior Cup. Since then until today, Lee has been proving her prowess, and one of the biggest instances of the same is the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Along with becoming the first Asian American woman to clinch gold in the women’s all-around event, she also bagged a bronze medal in the uneven bars and a silver medal in the team event. Sunisa Lee also had a successful collegiate gymnastics career with the Auburn Tigers at Auburn University. She was the NCAA beam champion and also the SEC uneven bars champion.
Apart from her notable achievements, Lee also experienced a serious health concern in February 2023. She went on a hiatus and announced an early end of her sophomore season, citing non-gymnastic health-related concerns that involved her kidneys. However, she has now made her comeback and has competed in several prestigious competitions in 2024. She has her eyes set on the Paris Olympics 2024, which is slated to be held from July 26 - August 11.
