Getting your 'beauty sleep' may sound like something out of a book or fairytale, but there's actually some truth behind it. Beauty sleep is not just a hypothetical concept; it's quite real.

Did you know that the body recovers and produces growth hormones while we sleep? To repair the day's damage to the skin, the body uses growth hormones to produce new cells.

Of course, the benefits of sleep aren't limited to the superficial. Learn more about the value of a good night's sleep, the drawbacks of a lack of it, and the numerous benefits of making up for lost time.

What are the Benefits of Beauty Sleep?

Below we are listing the benefits a good night's sleep can provide you:

1) Less Wrinkles

When you get enough beauty sleep, the skin repairs and renews itself by producing collagen. The skin becomes more supple and less prone to wrinkles when more collagen is produced.

2) Glowing Complexion

The increased blood flow to skin while you sleep gives you a radiant appearance when you wake up. If you don't get enough rest, your skin will look dull and lifeless.

3) Brighter Eyes

One of the first signs of sleep deprivation is puffy eyes, which are less noticeable if you get enough sleep.

4) Healthier Hair

Sleep deprivation can lead to thinning hair, split ends, damage, and even stunted growth.

Nutritional vitamins and minerals are transported to the hair follicles (the site of new hair growth) via the bloodstream. Sleep deprivation causes decreased blood flow, which in turn hinders hair growth, as less oxygen and nutrients reach the hair follicles.

5) Look and Feel Healthier

If you don't get enough beauty sleep, the eyes may appear hollow and the cheeks sink, giving you a sadder appearance. Facial expressions shift in predictable ways when you're tired. As a species, we have a tendency to frown more. These expressions may be the reason people say, "You look tired".

Others may be able to tell that you're exhausted by the appearance of your eyes (red, puffy, dark circles, drooping eyelids, paler skin).

How can you Maximize your Beauty Sleep?

Below, we talk about a routine that can help you maximize the benefits of your beauty sleep:

1) Wash your face before turning in

Not washing your face before bed can have a negative effect on its appearance the next day.

Even more so than in the morning, it's essential to wash your face before bed every night. You don’t need to use harsh chemicals or scrub your face too vigorously. All that's needed is a mild cleanser to get rid of grime, makeup, and excess oil.

2) Moisturize your skin

Skin can become dehydrated from repeated washings and from sleeping, especially if the air is dry. Water consumption can help, but using a topical moisturizer before bed is what the skin really needs.

All you need is a heavier nighttime moisturizer, like an oil or cream, to help the skin recover. Another option is to apply your regular daytime moisturizer and then, with clean hands, seal in the moisture by applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly.

3) Sleep on your back/ use a special pillowcase

When you sleep on a rough cotton surface, your face is compressed for hours at a time, which can irritate the skin and lead to wrinkles. Sleeping on one's stomach or side can cause wrinkles in the face and chest, but most lines appear due to frowning and squinting while awake. One simple solution is to sleep on your back, which also has other benefits.

Get a pillow that's gentle on the skin if you tend to sleep on your side. Copper-oxide pillowcases may reduce crow's feet and other fine lines, while a satin or silk pillow reduces skin irritation and compression.

4) Elevating your head

It has been shown that sleeping with your head slightly elevated can alleviate snoring, acid reflux, and nasal drip, all of which can disrupt sleep and, in turn, skin health. As it increases circulation and discourages the accumulation of blood, elevating the head also helps diminishes appearance of under-eye bags and dark circles.

The head of the bed can be propped up with a few inches of wood or an extra pillow, or you can use a mattress wedge.

How Important is Beauty Sleep?

Beauty sleep may be as close as humans can get to a 'fountain of youth'. It not only repairs cells but also rejuvenates and revives the mind and body, all of which play a role in looking young.

The key lies in getting enough quality sleep i.e. a minimum of 7-9 hours every day. If you're getting less than six hours of quality sleep, it's probably affect your appearance.

You will see almost an immediate improvement once you start getting 1-3 hours more of sleep. Within 2-3 weeks, you will see a marked difference in your looks.
