End of an era: Jim Brown, NFL icon and social activist dies at 87

Jim Brown, one of the best players in NFL history, died on May 18. He left the field at the height of his career to pursue acting and activism, as well as some off-field infractions that included accusations of violence against women. He was 87 at the time of his death.

Brown's wife, Monique, posted on Instagram on Friday afternoon to share the news of his passing. She said that on Thursday night in their Los Angeles home, Brown "passed peacefully".

She posted:

“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my husband, Jim Brown. He passed peacefully last night at our LA home. To the world, he was an activist, actor, and football star, to our family, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Our hearts are broken.”
