Jamie Raskin, who’s midway through his cancer treatment, is now in good shape and is believed to be very optimistic about his treatment.
Raskin, a representative for Maryland’s eighth congressional district, announced his diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a serious but curable form of cancer, in late December 2022.
According to the American Cancer Society, diffuse large B cell lymphoma grows quickly but is curable with chemotherapy through a four-drug routine administered in cycles three weeks apart. Although lymphoma can be cured, it depends on certain factors, the stage when the cancer is caught being a major one.
In a statement, Raskin wrote on his website:
“After several days of tests, I have been diagnosed with diffuse large B cell lymphoma, which is a serious but curable form of cancer. I am about to embark on a course of chemo-immunotherapy on an outpatient basis at Med Star Georgetown University Hospital and Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. The prognosis for most people in my situation is excellent after four months of treatment”.
Jamie Raskin health update: How is he battling lymphoma?
In January, on CNN’s State of the Union, Jamie Raskin said:
"I am hanging tough. My energy is good. I'm losing about 40 or 50 hairs a day, I would think, to chemo. So that's upsetting. But otherwise, I’m hanging tough, and the doctors are very optimistic, and I’m very optimistic that the chemo is going to get the cancer”.
Jamie Raskin, 60, recently shared a video to let his fans and well-wishers know that he's halfway through his treatment and that he's moving forward with positivity. He announced that he has undergone three of six rounds of chemotherapy.
“I’ve done three of six rounds of chemotherapy, and you guys have completely bolstered my courage and my confidence” – Jamie Raskin
Furthermore, Raskin also said that he has received great support from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers. In a statement, Raskin shared that the prognosis of diffuse large B cell lymphoma looks excellent after four months of undergoing the treatment.
Despite his health issues, Raskin remains hopeful and positive about his future. On his website, he wrote:
“I plan to get through this and, in the meantime, to keep making progress every day in Congress for American democracy”.
What is diffuse large B cell lymphoma?
Lymphoma basically occurs when the WBC of the immune system grows out of control and involves T cells or natural killer cells, B cells, or the three kinds of lymphocytes. The two major types of lymphocytes are Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodkin lymphoma, each of which has many subtypes.
While many cases of lymphoma are curable, untreated and fast-growing lymphoma can be life-threatening.
Symptoms of diffuse large B cell lymphoma
Diffuse large B cell lymphoma can cause several symptoms, but not everyone experiences the same.
Major symptoms include swollen glands that can occur in the neck, groin, or armpit. Sometimes, the glands can be deeper in the body, and you may not be able to see them. However, it might cause symptoms like bone pain, breathlessness, coughing, skin lumps, and severe pain in the abdomen and chest.
Other common symptoms of diffuse large B cell lymphoma include:
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fever
- Night sweats
- Fatigue
- Itching and inflammation
If you feel you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, consult a doctor immediately to get a proper diagnosis. That's especially important if you have any ongoing health concerns or if you're a cancer survivor.
