Start faster and finish stronger with the new Nike Metcon 1. For high intensity workouts one needs great support for nearly all sorts of movements. Metcon 1 does exactly this, it gives great support and offers great stability for these workouts.
The toe box of the Metcon 1 is made from Nike Hyperfuse material. Hyperfuse is three layers thick, which is melted together during a hot-melt process. The end result is a flexible, thin and an extremely durable material.
The Hyperfuse extends to the upper of the shoe and is the most interesting feature of this shoe. This provides a more consistent fit and nearly eliminates stitch on the upper. A regular mesh is used with this to make the shoe breathable and light. The top section of the upper is made from a soft padded material to improve comfort.
The upper is made using Nike Flywire technology. Flywire as defined by Nike, “Nike Flywire technology consists of strategically placed filaments that function like cables on a suspension bridge and offer support precisely where it’s needed.” Basically, it increases the stability of the shoe and at the same time reduces the weight of the shoe. The lacing is also made using Flywire technology. This provides quality grip when laced up and is probably the best lacing available in the market. This offers excellent midfoot lockdown. Large holes in the bottom of the tongue improve breathability and the mesh on the top helps protecting the shoe from dirt.
Regarding the sizing, this shoe is true to size and has a very comfortable fit. The wide shoe box (unlike other Nike shoes) helps in increasing the comfort levels.
The innersole and the heel counter both provide good support and comfort one needs for those long sessions. The one inch thick inner sole makes the shoe heavy. Even though the innersole is soft, it adds great support during workouts. It is not that flexible as compared to other shoes in the market. One advantage is that the innersole is replaceable. But longer runs are not that comfortable because of the heavy inner sole.
The sole of the shoe is sticky. Yes, it is sticky. It is amazing when used on indoor surfaces. The hexagonal patterns on the bottom of the shoe increasing flexibility. The same pattern is also seen on the side of the shoe. It works like a charm for rope climbs. It has tremendous grip levels in these conditions. Sadly though, the shoe doesn’t offer the same grip levels in wet conditions. It is completely useless on wet grass or wet artificial turf.
The 4 mm heel drop increases comfort when squatting. Both sides of the sole wing out increasing the stability when one does weightlifting or lateral running. The flex groves senn on the shoe aids natural movement.
Overall the shoe is great for indoor workouts and cross fit training sessions but it becomes less impressive once used outdoors. The price tag may not appeal to everyone out there. Super limited quantities make it even harder to get one of these shoes as of now. It is available for a price of $120 (around 7,500 INR) and is only available at the Nike online store right now. One has to wait until later this year for better availability. Availability in India is TBA.
Bottom-line: A solid shoe for everything you do in a gym.
