In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old girl named Alexee Trevizo has been charged with first-degree murder for putting her newborn baby in a hospital trash can, where it was later found dead. The investigation started on January 27 in the emergency room at the Artesia General Hospital.
Trevizo was arrested on May 10 but later released on a $100,000 bond ahead of her graduation. The police recently released its body camera video showing Trevizo admitting to her crime in front of her mother.
Here's the video of her detention:
What exactly happened at the New Mexico hospital?
In December 2022, Alexee Trevizo complained of severe back pain and went to an Artesia, New Mexico hospital where she was treated and later released.
However, a few weeks later, in January, she went back again complaining of back pain, but there she locked herself inside a bathroom and gave birth to a baby, according to hospital staff. She then stuffed the baby in a trash can and left.
According to the Artesia Police Department, Trevizo was charged last week with first-degree murder and alternatively abusing a child, resulting in death and tampering with evidence.
“I’m sorry, it came out of me” – Alexee Trevizo can be heard saying in the bodycam video
The shocking moment when the police confronted the 19-year-old was captured in the body camera footage. In the video, Trevizo can be heard saying:
"It came out of me, I didn’t know what to do. I put it in the bag, in the trash bag. I’m sorry mom”.
She added:
"Nothing was crying. It came out with nothing."
A hospital worker can be heard saying in the video:
“The baby’s dead. She killed the kid”.
A male medic present in the room asks Trevizo and her mother if they have any questions, to which the mother asks how big the baby is. The medic responded by saying:
“It’s full term”.
According to reports, Trevizo’s mother did not know that she was nine months pregnant. In the video, Trevizo’s mother can be seen holding her daughter’s hand as she pleads and says:
“What did you do?"
The doctors can also be heard saying:
"She just had a baby. I don’t know whether she has delivered the placenta. She is bleeding significantly."
Newborn’s death was classified as homicide
According to the police, the newborn’s body was taken to the Office of the Medical Investigator of New Mexico for autopsy.
The autopsy revealed that the cause of the newborn’s death was homicide and not consistent with a stillbirth, as the baby had air in his lungs at the time of its death.
Alexee Trevizo wasn’t aware of the pregnancy, according to her attorney
Gary C Mitchell, the attorney of Trevizo, said that the 19-year-old wasn’t aware that she was pregnant when she attended the Artesia General Hospital on January 27.
He also said that Trevizo has no criminal record and should not be facing a murder charge. There are major discrepancies about what happened in the hospital, and this isn’t a classic case of child abuse.
After four months of investigation, Alexee Trevizo was arrested on May 10 and charged with first-degree murder, child abuse and tampering with evidence. The teenager, though, was released on a $100,000 bond.
