What is Juvenile Arthritis and its Symptoms in Children?

Arthritis is a prevalent condition that results in joint pain and is frequently linked to the elderly. When joint pain affects young children, it is referred to as juvenile arthritis. According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it has been revealed that more than 200,000 children in the United States may be experiencing symptoms of arthritis. This underscores the significance of recognizing the symptoms of arthritis in children.

According to the report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between the year 2017 to 2021, it was found that nearly 220,000 children were diagnosed with this joint disorder.

Furthermore, the Arthritis Foundation claimed that the cases of the same in the United States were higher than 300,000.

Along with this, the recent report provided by the CDC also claims that the most likely age group to get juvenile arthritis is the group between 12 to 17 years old teenagers.

In addition to this, it was noted that cases of this disorder have become more prevalent in African-American or non-Hispanic black children compared to non-Hispanic white children.

As per the study, this condition also came with other health problems like anxiety, depression, and obesity.

This type of joint problem is caused by children who are below the age of 17 years. This condition is caused due to confusion in the immune system where it mistakenly attacks its own tissues in the joints.

The various symptoms related to this can be as follows:


Inflammation in the Joints

Kids who often get swelling, pain, and redness in the joints make the daily tasks difficult to perform for the children can be a common symptom of this condition.


Symptoms in the Skin

Based on the type of condition various symptoms can show up on children's faces which could be red-colored rashes or pink rashes on the face. These rashes may be irritating and painful for the child.


Problems in the Eye

In this condition, the eyes can be affected by dryness, pain, and vision problems.


In addition to this, the other minor symptoms can also be internal where it may cause digestion problems or problems in the lungs causing shortness of breath.

There is no known treatment for this condition, however, there are methods that can actually contribute to reducing the symptoms which in turn help provide relief from this condition. Consumption of DMARDS can help suppress the effects of the immune system which hinders it from attacking the joints, thus reducing the side effects of this condition.

Another preferred way is by providing the child with physiotherapy sessions where the child can work on their flexibility and improve their body coordination.

Further, surgical methods like joint replacement can also help the child to get relief from the pain.


One should note that there is no cure for this condition, an early diagnosis for the same can help in improving their overall well-being. The severity of this condition marks the importance of understanding the symptoms. Thus if your child is facing the above-mentioned symptoms it is better to get medical guidance as soon as possible.
