After a flurry of unnerving results in the tourney, Indian women’s team came back strongly to clinch a 1-0 victory over Canada, at Hastings, today.
Despite playing the pressing game right from the onset, the Indian eves had to wait till the 43rd minute to find a breakthrough which turned out to be the decider. While the Canadians defended in numbers, 22-year-old Lilima Minz slotted home from open play to claim the only goal of the game.
In the other game, World No.15 Ireland pulled off a stunning comeback as they went from 3-1 down with 3 minutes left on the clock to defeat higher ranked Korea via the shootout that followed a 3-3 scoreline at regulation time.
Thus, they set up Sunday’s fixture against the Indians, who are currently ranked 13 themselves.
So far, it had been a rather forgettable outing for the Indians at the Hawke’s Bay Cup which saw them getting crushed at the hands of New Zealand, Ireland, China and Japan, respectively. A commendable feat, today’s win should serve to provide a much-needed boost to the Indians’ morale.
What looks promising, should they manage to top it off with a victory over Ireland on Sunday, it will be the perfect icing on the cake prior to their Rio campaign.
