Goals rained on the opening day of the 3rd National Sub-Junior East Zone Hockey Championship, which got underway at the Nurul Amin Stadium in Nagaon in Assam.
Hosts Assam made the loudest noises on day one, pulverizing unfancied Tripura 16-0. Assam owe their big win to the two Boros – Rajesh and Rituraj – as both notched up sparkling hat-tricks to ride roughshod over their opponents.
The home side drew first blood through Bedadyuti Chakravorty in the 5th minute.
Rinku Gogoi doubled the lead in the 10th minute before Jyoti Manash fired the third goal in the 15th minute.
Rituraj Boro then got into the act, sounding the board in the 21st minute. Jyoti Manash added another to his tally in the 25th minute to make it 5-0.
Rituraj Boro again rattled the Tripura cage in the 27th minute to make it 6-0 before the other Boro in the side – Rajesh – struck twice in the 29th and 33rd minute.
Bidyut Daimari added another in the 34th minute as Assam went into half-time with an imposing 9-0 lead.
Tripura conceded an early goal in the second half when Junaidul Islam found the target in the 36th minute.
Tripura’s woes were compounded when they leaked an own goal a minute later.
Niranjan Boro struck in the 40th minute as Assam went 12-0 up.
Rajesh Boro completed his hat-trick in the 42nd minute.
Manjeet Gogoi breached the Tripura goalmouth twice in the 48th and 52nd minutes respectively as Assam went berserk.
Rituraj Boro became the second player in the tournament to complete his hat-trick in the 64th minute as Assam capped off a 16-0 rout of Tripura.
In another Group A match, Jharkhand swamped Manipur 7-0. Sudhir Munda was the star of Jharkhand’s facile win, firing a superb hat-trick.
Mahendra Topno gave them an early lead before Sudhir Munda hit a purple patch. Soma Bhengra, Amit Bhengra and Olevius Toppo scored a goal each for the winners.
In the same group, Mizoram edged out Bihar 2-1.
Ramdintluanga pulled Mizoram ahead in the 30th minute before Raushan Kumar restored parity for Bihar in the second half.
Ramdintluanga then scored the match-winner with eight minutes remaining from the final hooter.
In the women’s section, Jharkhand rode on a fine hat-trick by Betan DungDung to hammer Bihar 10-0 in a Group B match. Rani Nisha scored twice while Pradhan Kantim, Anupam Horo, Pramila Soreng, Sitamani Topno and Divya DungDung scored once for the winners.
In the same group, Bengal pipped Manipur 3-2. Madushree Tudu, Sathi Dolui and Tumpa Dalui fired for Bengal while Bramacharimayum Devi and Kshetrimayum Devi scored for the losers.
