New Delhi, Dec 6 (IANS) Belgium shocked defending champions Germany 3-1 in the first Pool A clash of the Hockey Junior World Cup at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here Friday.
Though Germany were the more aggressive team in the first half, Belgium entered the break leading 1-0. Belgium goalkeeper Arnaud Flamand made three key saves in the opening frame after a wave of German attacks.
In the second half, Germany dominated midfield play pacing Belgium but were unable to find success. Belgium’s speed and tenacity finally reaped rewards.
Maxime Cappelle scored his second goal to double his team’s advantage.
Christopher Ruhr finally got Germany on the scoreboard converting a penalty corner in the 62nd minute.
Alexandre van Linthoudt silenced his German opponents in the final minute, giving Belgium three points with a 3-1 triumph.
