A Hockey India League (HIL) contest between Kalinga Lancers and Hyderabad Toofans witnessed a series of penalty corners interspersed with fast end-to-end action, culminating in a 5-1 win for the Hyderabad side on Sunday (January 12).
Alexander Hendrickx and Gonzalo Peillat both came good from the top of the circle, with Maico Casella slotting in a cricket-style volley from open play.
Hendrickx though struck the post twice while Peillat scored a brace before a flurry of field goals enabled the Toofans to emerge victorious and rise to the second spot in the Hockey India League standings.
A goalbound shot off the stick of Thierry Brinkman was ruled dangerous in the fourth minute after a cagey start from both sides. The Lancers won their first penalty corner of the game a minute later.
Alexander Hendrickx fired in a grounded drag-flick that found its way into the back of the net through the pads of goalkeeper Vikas Dahiya. Coach Valentin Altenburg, however, showed no emotion whatsoever even as the Toofans won a penalty corner at the other end right away.
Gonzalo Peillat directed a lofted drag flick into the Lancer's goal angled between the goalkeeper and the post-man in the sixth minute.
The Lancers won three back-to-back penalty corners in the seventh minute, with Hendrickx striking the post off the third attempt.
The Hyderabad side earned their third penalty corner in the ninth minute. Amandeep Lakra's flick and the subsequent rebound was stopped by Krishan Pathak.
Emotions ran high between the players even as the Lancers won another penalty corner before both sides went into the second quarter having scored a goal apiece.
Maico Casella scored his first goal of the tournament with a powerful lofted volley off an aerial pass in the 21st minute. Krishan Pathak was rooted to the spot, completely taken by surprise at the speed and the accuracy of the first time shot.
Shilanand Lakra's shot on goal was taken on the arm by Krishan Pathak before Arshdeep Singh won the Toofans a penalty corner at the stroke of half-time.
Gonzalo Peillat aimed his drag flick towards the left post, beating Krishan Pathak for the second time while also ensuring that the Toofans went into the long breather of their sixth Hockey India League game, leading 3-1.
Nicholas Bandurak found Nic Woods' foot in the circle in the 40th minute. Alexander Hendrickx struck for the post off his drag flick for the second time in the game.
Tim Brand's tomahawk from close range was cleared by Krishan Pathak in the 43rd minute. Pathak could do little when Brand was back in the circle in the 47th minute, scoring a fourth goal for the Toofans from open play.
Valentin Altenburg made a bold move by taking Krishan Pathak off in the 51st minute which backfired when Arshdeep Singh sent the ball into an empty goal three minutes later.
Following the heavy defeat, the Kalinga Lancers have now dropped to the sixth position in the Hockey India League points table.
