An intense Hockey India League encounter between the Soorma Hockey Club and the Delhi SG Pipers ended in a 2-2 draw on Monday (January 6) before the Harmanpreet Singh-led side picked up a bonus point with a shootout win.
Vincent Vanasch who had an incredible game for the Soorma Hockey Club on Sunday continued to stand tall in goal against the Pipers.
It took some persistence and a brilliant effort from Tomas Domene to finally beat the Belgian veteran at the end of the third quarter before Jake Whetton helped Manjeet score a second. A Harmanpreet Singh penalty corner brace leveled things up for the Soormas in their fourth Hockey India League game.
The Delhi SG Pipers earned the first penalty corner of the match in the sixth minute but failed to convert even as the Soorma Hockey Club preferred to play an early half-court press. Goalkeeper Benjamin Rennie was called into action in the ninth minute but had little to do after pulling off an early save.
Graham Reid's team earned a penalty corner early in the second quarter. Tomas Domene's drag flick was directed straight at Vincent Vanasch who had no problems clearing the ball.
The Soorma Hockey Club refused to commit too many men upfield preferring to sit deep and draw the Pipers forward even as the Delhi side kept possession for the most part of the game.
The Soorma Hockey Club earned their first penalty corner against the run of play in the 36th minute, which was followed by a second. Nicholas della Torre's drag flicks were taken care of by Rennie.
Ky Willott manufactured a penalty corner for the Pipers in the 41st minute but Nicolas della Torre's drag flick was wide off the target. Tomas Domene managed to direct a shot on goal from the edge of the circle a minute later but the ball was palmed away by Vincent Vanasch.
Domene's persistence paid off when the Argentinian finally beat Vanasch with a spectacular revolving run as he sprinted past the deep defense before chipping the ball into the back of the net in the 43rd minute.
Jake Whetton then sent in a probing cross for an onrushing Manjeet who tapped the ball in much to the delight of coach Graham Reid.
Harmanpreet Singh had a chance to reduce the deficit after the Soormas won a penalty corner in the 48th with the birthday boy slotting the follow-up award into the back of the net.
The Soorma Hockey Club took Vincent Vanasch off in the 55th minute before earning their fifth penalty corner. Harmanpreet Singh displayed his magic from the top of the circle beating Benjamin Rennie to restore parity for his team a couple of minutes later.
After a flurry of misses from both teams, Soorma Hockey Club edged the Delhi side 3-1 in the shootout and have thus moved to the second spot in Hockey India League points table.
