Islamabad, April 17 (IANS) The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) appointed coaches for its senior and the junior teams after the country for the first time failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
The PHF said that Olympian Shahnaz Shaikh will take charge of the senior team while former captain Manzoor Ahmed will coach the junior team, reports Xinhua.
PHF secretary Rana Mujahid said Wednesday the executive board met in Lahore and decided to make wholesome changes in the management of both the senior and junior teams.
“We have given the responsibility to the most experienced players of the country with an objective to make our teams capable of producing desired results at the international level,” said Mujahid.
Shaikh has been assigned the task to prepare the senior team for the 2016 Olympics. The senior team, four-time champions, shockingly failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time. They also finished at the 12th and last position in the 2010 World Cup in India and were 7th in 2012 London Olympics.
Ahmed, who led Pakistan to its last Olympic gold in 1984, will work as the head coach of the junior side and will prepare the team for the 2016 junior World Cup in India.
Mujahid said the PHF executive board also formed a new selection committee headed by Islah-ud-Din and it will spot new talent at domestic level.
