We are almost at the end of the first week of Rio 2016 and all the action is well underway. Numerous records have been broken in various disciplines while India has produced some surprisingly brilliant performances.
One such surprise is Rower Dattu Bhokanal who rose out of great poverty and is now competing on the biggest stage possible. Dattu Bhokanal plays his Semifinal Round on Day 7 of the Olympics.
Day 6 saw the reintroduction of Golf in the World Games. 12th August will see the continuation of this sophisticated game as we move on to Round 2. India’s Anirban Lahiri and SSP Chawrasia will be seen in action on this day.
Day 7 marks the beginning of Athletics and we have a number of athletes featuring in their respective events. Out of the 34 strong athlete contingent, 8 of them feature today. Manpreet Kaur begins her Olympic dream in Women’s Shotput while Vikas Gowda stars in Men’s Discus Throw.
Three Indians are to participate in the 20km Racewalk for men while sprinters Jinson Jonson and Muhamad Anas will be seen in action in Men’s 800m and Men’s 400m respectively. The Men’s Long Jump event will feature Ankit Sharma among its ranks.
After a disappointing start, the Badminton squad of India will look to set things right as both the Men’s and Women’s Doubles Team feature on Day 7. Similar encouraging performances are expected from the Men’s Hockey Team who lost to Netherlands in their previous games. With a win, the men can qualify for the next round.
Shooting and Boxing are two other areas that will feature a number of Indians and are sports to watch out for. Also, Atanu Das will want to progress in the next rounds as he plays in the round-of-16 against world no.8.
