After Jitu Rai’s qualification disappointing finish on Day 1 of the Olympics, the Indian fans were left ruing the chance at missing out on a medal from their best hope. This feeling of angst was further accentuated after the participants in Tennis and Table Tennis failed to impress on the first day.
On Day 2, Heena Sidhu managed to achieve the 14th spot among 44 shooters which was not enough to secure a place for her in the finals.
On the Hockey front, things seemed less dismal as the Women’s Team held Japan to a 2-2 draw. Despite being dubbed as one of the weakest teams in their group, the ladies seemed to show no fear while facing their opponents with confidence.
The Women’s Archey Team shone too despite Deepika Kumari falling prey to her nerves. Her teammates Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi did just enough to see India progress through to the Quarter-finals of the team event, where they fell to Russia.
Day 4 of the Rio Olympics promises a variety of categories to watch out for. The national sport of the country will see its players take the stage once again as the Men’s and the Women’s Teams take on Germany and Great Britain respectively in their group matches.
After defeating Ireland 3-2 in their first group-stage match, the men will be looking to continue their winning streak. The women will, on the other hand, take heart from their fierce performance against Japan today and would want to play some fine Hockey to give themselves a chance at progressing.
Olympics medallists in Shooting and two of India’s dependable medal hopes for Rio 2016, Gagan Narang and Abhinav Bindra, will also be seen in action in the 10m air rifle event. Swimmers Sajan Prakash and Shivani Kataria will also feature today as will ace archer Laxmirani Majhi for their individual events.
Times for the rounds following the qualifications have also been listed above, keeping in mind the possibility of our athletes progressing further. The exact draws, should this occur, will be announced before the corresponding competition.
