It was yet another mixed day for the Indian contingent at the 2016 Rio Olympics as the wait for the elusive first medal continued for the athletes. Heena Sidhu began proceedings for India in the Women’s 25m Pistol event, but just like in the 10m Air Pistol, she failed to deliver – finishing a disappointing 20th in qualification.
Hockey
After losing in agonising fashion to Germany the previous day, the Indian Men’s hockey team clinched their second win of the competition, beating Argentian 2-1 – thanks to goals from Chinglensana Singh and Kothajit Singh. They will next take on the Netherlands on the 11th of August.
Archery
Atanu Das in the men’s Individual archery event progressed through to the Round of 16 after putting in two magnificent performances in the Round of 64 and Round of 32. He defeated Jitbahadur Muktan of Nepal and Adrián Puentes of Cuba 6-0 and 6-4 respectively to move into the next round.
Das will next be seen in action on the 12th of August when he faces up to World No. 8 Lee Seung-yun of South Korea.
Rowing
In one of the most inspiring stories at the Olympics, rower Dattu Bhokanal just missed out on progressing through to the medal round in the men’s singles sculls. He recorded a time of 6:59.89 in his quarterfinal but remains in contention for a Top 15 finish. He will compete in the Single Sculls C/D Semifinal on Wednesday evening.
Boxing
Vikas Kishan got his boxing campaign off to a positive start, defeating Charles Conwell of the United States 3-0 in his Round of 32 clash. His Round of 16 bout will be on the 13th of August where he will take on Onder Sipal of Turkey.
Day 5 at the Rio Olympics promises to be yet another cracking affair, and hopefully we will get to see an Indian on top of the podium in one or more events.
