The Hockey India League kicked-off last evening, so it’s best if we get ourselves acquainted with the rules:

1) The game will last 70 minutes and be divided into four quarters, each of 17 and a half minutes.

2) Each team will have a maximum of 25 registered players.

3) Only 18 players can play out of 25 registered players.

4) 2 time-outs of 2 minutes each can be called by the team (not mandatory).

5) A team can ask the umpire for a video referral only once in a match.

6) Video Referrals can only be asked to review decisions regarding goal line disputes.

7) When the game ends in a tie, a penalty shoot-out will take place to decide the winner, which will commence in the knock-out stages.

8) Only 8 seconds will be given to the players to score the goal, during the shoot-out, once the umpire blows the whistle.

9) A player can take as many shots as possible in his 8 seconds provided, during the shoot-out.

10) If a goalkeeper fouls intentionally, a penalty stroke will be awarded.
