At the FPAI Indian Football Awards 2013 on Thursday, I-League champions Churchill Brothers SC from Goa won two awards – the special award for club founder and long-time president Churchill Alemao, while the ‘Player of the Year’ award went to midfielder Lenny Rodrigues. For Lenny Rodrigues, it has been a sensational season, having played a crucial role in his team’s title triumph while also becoming a regular in the Indian national team.
Speaking about the award Lenny Rodrigues said, “I would like to thank all the players who voted for me. I would also like to thank my team-mates, coaching staff and Mr. Churchill Alemao and his family for supporting and believing in my abilities.”
Meanwhile, a Special Award was presented by FPAI president Baichung Bhutia to Churchill Alemao for his massive contribution to Indian football and winning the 2012/13 I-League title. His children Ms Valanka Alemao, Churchill Brothers CEO, and patron Savio Alemao accepted the award in his name.
Valanka Alemao said, “I would like to thank the FPAI and Baichung Bhutia for recognizing the hard work put in by my dad for the development of Indian football. Winning the I-League is a very proud moment for us and a gift to my dad for his passion for football. I do believe if like minded work together, Indian football will grow and will be able to compete with cricket.”
Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan congratulated Ms Valanka Alemao and Savio Alemao on Churchill Brothers victory in the I-League and hoped other passionate football lovers like Churchill Alemao would come forward to support Indian football.
