The planned IMG-Reliance IPL-style football tournament has received an unlikely backer in former England and Manchester United defender Gary Pallister, who was in New Delhi today, called it a “great initiative” while he was in town for the launch of the second edition of ‘Airtel Rising Stars’. Pallister at the press conference said, “I am big cricket fan. I have watched the IPL. It’s a great idea, great initiative that should be backed. But whether it works for football, only time will tell. It depends on how it is received. Hopefully, it will get the backing.”

Gary Pallister is already the second footballer from England to support the IPL-style football tournament idea after Wales and Swansea City FC defender Neil Taylor had made a something statement a couple of weeks ago while on a visit to Kolkata.
After all that criticism from the I-League Professional Football Clubs Association, a lot of the fans and certain sections of the media in recent weeks; the AIFF and IMG-Reliance will be happy to get such unlikely support for their proposed IPL-style football tournament.
