Former Real Madrid midfielder Borja Fernandez has confirmed on his official twitter account @BorjaFF that he is going to join Indian Super League’s Kolkata franchise Atletico de Kolkata.
The translation of the tweet reads: “After 13 years in Spain, I’ve decided to take a break and experience an adventure abroad… Indian Super League: Atlético Madrid Kolkata.”
The 33-year-old defensive midfielder further added that he rejected several offers from Spain in favour of a move to the ISL
“Thanks to the teams who tempted me to have another season in Spain, but I may not have this opportunity again,” was the English translation.
Fernandez is a product of the Real Madrid youth system and also played for the first team of the Spanish giants. He also had spells at Mallorca, Valladolid and Deportivo La Coruna and spent the last two seasons at Getafe.
He has represented Spain at various age-group levels but has never represented the senior national team. Sportskeeda learnt that Fernandez will be one of the international players as he doesn’t qualify to be a marquee foreigner.
Atletico de Kolkata will officially unveil their marquee foreigner and manager on Monday and the announcement is expected to be made by the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
