Indian custodian Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is two victories away from getting his first winners’ medal in Europe as his club Stabaek are in the semi-finals of the Norwegian Cup and the Punjabi lad is in the match squad for that semi clash against Molde on Wednesday, Sportskeeda can reveal
There is a familiar name in the Molde side as Indian-origin midfielder Harmeet Singh is expected to start for them in this one-off semi-final which will be played at Stabaek’s home ground, Nadderud Stadion, in Baerum, with the kickoff time being 23:30 IST.
Gurpreet will be on the bench but has already done remarkably well to become second-choice at Stabaek, ahead of Norwegian Borger Thomas and only behind first-choice Sayouba Mande, who was part of Ivory Coast’s 2014 FIFA World Cup squad.
Ever since making the bench for the first team’s domestic league encounter against Stromsgodset last month, the 22-year-old has been part of the squad in each of their fixtures in Norway’s top-most league, Tippeligaen.
Gurpreet has also started for Stabek II in six matches of the Norwegian third tier, keeping a clean sheet once. Despite making Indian football proud in Europe, Gurpreet has somehow missed out on a spot in Wim Koevermans’ 20-man India squad for next month’s international friendlies against Palestine in Siliguri.
Hopefully a start for the first-team isn’t far away for Gurpreet but for now he would be aiming to win the Cup semi-final against Molde.
