Sporting Clube de Goa and defending champions Mohun Bagan played out a 1-1 draw in their I-League clash at the Fatorda Stadium here on Tuesday. Despite the draw, the Kolkata giants held on to the top spot in the points table with 22 points from 10 games, having won six and drawn four.
The Goan club have 13 points from 10 games, with three wins, four draws and three losses.
Brandon Fernandes opened the scoring for the visitors in the 28th minute, which was followed by an own goal by Bagan's Raju Gaikwad (39 minute) which saw the points being shared between the teams.
Second half saw attacking football from both sides
The visitors got off to a positive start with some attacking play upfront and it eventually paid off when Fernandes opened the scoring for the defending champions.
Winger Sony Norde sprinted and danced his way on to the left as he went past Joseph Clemente and played a cross in for Fernandes who had the simplest of finishes to make it 1-0 for the visitors.
But just a few minutes later, the home fans got a surprise gift as Bagan's Gaikwad scored an own goal to bring in the equaliser for the home side. The second half saw a flurry of attacks from Norde, but he was unable to find the second goal for the visitors.
On the other hand, the hosts tried their best, but the Bagan defence held on firmly to deny them the winning goal.
Bagan next face Aizawl FC on March 26 while Sporting Clube will take on Bengaluru FC on March 6.
