The IMG-R league: Taking Indian football forward

The IMG-R league does not promise to bring about a revolution in Indian football, but certainly portrays to be a step in that direction. Whether it does or not will only be illuminated when dusk settles in on the tournament, and we can then reflect upon the trail it leaves behind.

While it does seem to be a promising effort, with all the fresh ideas and intentions associated with the endeavour, it also requires clarity in organisation. Only when there is clarity with regard to the foresighted achievements of the tournament, and a firm team directing it, will it be possible to make this venture a positive drive for Indian football.

The IMG-R league is a big step towards determining India’s future footballing status, and thereby needs to be treated efficiently and with strong responsibility. Mismanagement at this level will only prove to be a downfall in the rising efforts of the sport’s administrative department of the country.

Most importantly, the players need to be brought into the limelight. Once players are valued, and that is a well known phenomenon not only amongst the football community but also far and wide, diverse avenues will open up for aspirants of the game. And that is all that India needs at the moment – as many opportunities as possible.

Perception of Indian football in India will take some considerable time to change, and that will come only through a new perspective of the sport. This tournament must provide that; give the masses – particularly the youth – opportunity to nurse a new outlook towards the sport in India. And you never know what might rise out of it.

With every new beginning comes a set of apprehensions. The IMG-R too has been no exception to that. However, solutions ought to be focused on rather than alternatives.

For example, there was a clash of tides amongst the I-league clubs and the IMG-R unit regarding the availability of players. It was good to find the two partner together, rather than one trying to make an exit route for the other. This shows a sign of collectivity and thus united efforts – what Indian football needs to improve towards.

As it has been stated, the players must not be castled anywhere in the middle – that is the worst effect in any sport. They must always be free to play the game at their best.

At the same time, the sport ought to be kept a sport and not be diluted to any other form of entertainment. Football is the key focus and that is what should come out of the entire experience.

With eyes popped wide open, everyone awaits to see what this fresh wave brings onto the shores of the Indian pitch. Will it be able to induce further football into the culture of Indian sport?

We will have to wait and watch. Let the whistle blow.
