What's the story?
Sunday's ISL game between Bengaluru FC and ATK was dominated by the rumours surrounding Robbie Keane's future at the home of the champions. Since the past one week, Keane has been linked with a move back to England as his former side, Wolverhampton Wanderers are said to be interested in taking the 37-year-old on board.
However, ATK boss Teddy Sheringham has played down all the talks of Keane leaving as mere speculation and is hoping that the veteran striker will complete the entire ISL season. Talking to the press, Sheringham said, "I have heard the speculation as well but I presume that's what it is, speculation. Robbie hasn't heard anything or he hadn't the last time I spoke to him."
In case you didn't know...
Keane started his professional career with Wolves at the tender age of 17. It was speculated that an emotional return to the Molineux was on cards but Sheringham's views on the matter might cool down the rumours.
The heart of the matter
Nuno Espirito Santo - Wolves' manager is looking for a striker in the January transfer window and supposedly had earmarked Robbie Keane for the role. But despite the Republic of Ireland striker's injury woes for ATK this season, Keane remains an integral part of the Kolkata based side.
"We want to keep Robbie here. He is a fantastic player and great leader for the team. I want him to be there," added the manager on his star striker.
What next?
Keane has struggled with an achilles tendon injury this season in the ISL which has led him to make just four appearances for ATK. He featured in the 1-0 defeat to Bengaluru FC and is now expected to start against NorthEast United on January 12.
Author's take
ATK are currently seventh in the ISL table and will require Keane for the remainder of the league phase if they want to have any chance of retaining the trophy. Sheringham's thoughts on the matter will give a sense of relief to the ATK fans.
