Aizawl FC scripted history under Khalid Jamil when they lifted the 2017 I-League trophy, becoming the first north-east club to do so.

As a result, the Kolkata giants East Bengal showed great interest in him and roped him in as the head coach for the upcoming I-League season in a two-year contract.

The 41-year-old was paid a hefty amount of Rs. 1.25 crore, which remains the highest fee for an Indian coach in Indian football.

The Red and Gold Brigade went on to finish fourth in a nerve-wracking I-League season, in which the winners Minerva Punjab were decided on the final matchday. The Kolkata-based side also became champions of the Calcutta Football League under him.

Jamil could have had a fairytale run but it was not meant to be. Even though East Bengal reached the final of the inaugural edition of the Super Cup, they lost 1-4 to Bengaluru in the final which meant that Jamil would have to pack his bags.

The 41-year-old stayed for one year with East Bengal and was sacked in April 2018. Technical director and club legend Subhash Bhowmick also had a big say in this decision.

Kolkata football is just this unforgiving and expects instant returns that if you do not bring home the title, better prepare to go back home. Another testament that life as a coach is ruthless and punishing.

#1 Miguel Angel Portugal

The latest coach to bear the brunt of poor results is Miguel Angel Portugal. The Spaniard had a fair share of experience coaching in the ISL.

He was with the Delhi Dynamos FC for the 2017-18 season in which they finished 8th on the table. Portugal was roped in by the Pune-based franchise of ISL for the ongoing season in August 2018.

Miguel is always focused on endorsing an attacking brand of football. Even though Delhi had finished eighth under him, they had shown a massive turnaround towards the end and were defeated in only three of their last 11 matches.

They even scored 27 goals in 18 matches. The Stallions also wished to embrace his attacking mentality and were hoping for good results under him.

However, it was not meant to be despite players like Marcelinho, Iain Hume (currently recovering from injury) and Emiliano Alfaro present in the team. Players of such high calibre were just not producing the desired goods under him.

After just three games in charge during ISL, Miguel was sacked by FC Pune City -- making it the quickest parting between club and coach in the history of the league.

After the 1-1 draw against Delhi Dynamos, the Stallions received a 0-2 drubbing from Mumbai City FC in the Maha derby. The biggest disappointment came when they were thrashed 3-0 by Bengaluru FC at home.

The decision to sack Miguel was taken just hours after this loss and made official the following day.

Pradyum Reddy, who was the Technical Director for Pune, will now serve as the interim Head coach.
