The next season of I-League will begin with the entrance of the first women referee at the highest level of Indian football as Goan FIFA referee Maria Rebello is all set to grace the I-League.
Maria, who also represented the Indian women’s national team in her playing days, is now known for her proficiency in the field of refereeing. Former referee Goutam Kar, who is in charge of the referring association of The AIFF, has just confirmed that news.
I-League CEO Sunanda Dhar welcomed the decision, adding: “We are all excited to welcome her as a fresh air in Indian football. It can be a huge boost to the footballing culture of our country.”
Even though female referees in men’s football is not an uncommon occurrence, this decision will certainly encourage the other women referees in India .
