It has been learnt that a meeting to appoint India’s next coach to succeed Wim Koevermans will be held once the Indian Super League (ISL) finals are over.
According to sources, Bengaluru FC coach Ashley Westwood was approached for the job who rejected the offer. It is believed that he is more interested in coaching the club at continental level and if JSW field an ISL team next season, he will be a part of the backroom staff.
Many names are suggested for the job – Brazilian legend Zico is one of the names which are suggested. But Trevor Morgan and Rickie Herbert are the contenders for the job. Morgan has a successful career in Indian football, reaching great heights with East Bengal and achieving the same with Kerala Blasters. Herbert had a dismal season as NorthEast United finished last in ISL.
Rumours also had it that the duo of Peter Ried and Steve Darby can also be appointed. AIFF is also interested in Jose Pekerman who was Colombia’s coach in 2014 FIFA World Cup. But signing such a big name is a rarity because of the high wages.
