Chennaiyin FC secured a slender 1-0 victory over Hyderabad FC to open their points tally in the 2023-24 Indian Super League (ISL) campaign on Monday, October 23.
Owen Coyle made several changes to his starting lineup, which included a change in formation, as Chennaiyin FC adopted a 5-3-2 setup.
They started on the front foot and their efforts paid dividends, as they opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Following a quick counter-attack, Ankit Mukherjee’s delivery found Connor Shields inside the six-yard box, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.
The home team quickly recovered from the setback and created a few excellent chances to try and level the proceedings.
However, Chennaiyin FC stayed solid at the back, with Debjit Majumder making a few crucial saves. As the halftime whistle blew, Hyderabad had dominated possession, but it was the Marina Machans who held the lead.
The second half unfolded much like the first, with Hyderabad FC maintaining possession but struggling to generate clear-cut opportunities. As the match entered its final quarter, the Nizams pushed for an equalizer, leaving gaps in their defense that Chennaiyin exploited on the counter-attack.
Although the visitors missed a couple of presentable chances, they defended resolutely to secure a vital victory. This win propelled Owen Coyle’s team to 10th in the league standings, while Hyderabad FC now find themselves at the bottom of the table without any points to their name.
