Mumbai City FC have extended the contract of centre-back Tiri, according to IFTWC - Indian Football. Despite receiving offers from several other ISL clubs, the Spaniard has decided to continue his journey with the Islanders. His current contract is set to expire on Friday, May 31.
The 32-year-old has been associated with Indian football for almost a decade now, having started his stint with Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) in the second edition of the ISL in 2015. In the following season, Tiri went on to clinch the ISL Cup Trophy with ATK as they defeated Kerala Blasters FC in the final held in Kochi via a penalty shootout.
Tiri had a memorable debut campaign with Mumbai City FC
Tiri represented Jamshedpur FC and ATK Mohun Bagan for three years each before joining Mumbai City FC ahead of the 2023-24 season. Throughout the season, he featured in 28 matches across competitions and was a pillar of their defense.
He was also a pivotal member of Mumbai's 2023-24 ISL Cup Trophy triumph. Given his immense experience, ISL exposure, and title-winning track record, Tiri's contract extension will be a major boost for Petr Kratky's men heading into the upcoming season of Indian football.
His only goal of the 2023-24 ISL season came up in his side's 3-2 home defeat against his former club Jamshedpur FC at the Mumbai Football Arena in February. Despite a change at the helm mid-season with Petr Kratky replacing the highly successful Des Buckingham as their head coach, Mumbai City FC maintained their winning momentum.
The Islanders have failed to defend their ISL Shield title, losing to ultimate champions Mohun Bagan in their final fixture. But Mumbai City bounced back strongly in the ISL final to defeat the Mariners in their backyard to lift their second ISL Cup Trophy.
