Jamshedpur FC have announced the signing of Australian forward Jordan Murray for the upcoming season. Murray, previously a part of Jamshedpur’s ISL Shield-winning side, becomes the club’s fifth addition this summer.
For the 28-year-old, it’s a return to familiar ground, having played under Owen Coyle during the 2021-22 season, where he scored four goals in 17 appearances.
In an interview with Jamshedpur media after signing his contract, Murray expressed his excitement about rejoining the team and his commitment to giving his best effort.
“I’m overjoyed to be back at Jamshedpur FC! My goal is to relive the history we created together and perform at the highest level. The furnace is an intimidating venue for opposing teams, and I’m excited to be a part of it once again. Under Coach Khalid Jamil’s leadership, I’m ready to give my all and prove my dedication to the club, my teammates, and the passionate fans," Murray said (via JFC Media).
Murray, who began his career in Australia, played in the A-League for Central Coast Mariners before joining Kerala Blasters FC in 2020. There, he scored seven goals in his debut season, attracting the attention of Owen Coyle and Jamshedpur the following year.
After spending a year in Thailand, Murray returned to India to join Coyle’s Chennaiyin FC last season, where he played a key role in the team’s playoff run. Overall, he scored seven goals and provided four assists for the Marina Machans across all competitions.
Head coach Khalid Jamil, who recently extended his contract, highlighted that Murray’s experience in India will be invaluable to the club. He also believes the Australian forward has the potential to be a game-changer in the attacking areas.
“Jordan Murray is a seasoned player whose experience in Indian football is invaluable, and his ability to adapt to different striking roles is a huge asset. He’s versatile enough to play as both a lone striker and a second striker,” he said (via JFC Media).
“I’ve spoken to him at length, and I know he’s aware of the competition he’ll face this season. It’s a crucial time for him to prove his worth, and I believe he has the talent and work ethic to rise to the challenge. He’s a quality striker who can make a real difference for us," Jamil added.
Jamshedpur FC continue to be active in the transfer market
After finishing last season strongly under Jamil, Jamshedpur FC, despite missing the playoffs, certainly have many positives to take forward. The team’s style of play under the Indian coach was attractive, while the performances improved in the second half of the season.
Although the Red Miners lost a few key players, they have made notable progress in the transfer window after extending Jamil’s contract. The club has already made five new signings.
Forward Javier Siverio signed permanently after his loan spell last season, while goalkeeper Amrit Gope and midfielder Mobashir Rahman, who is returning to the club, have also been added. Additionally, winger Sreekuttan VS from Gokulam Kerala FC, who has impressed in the I-League in recent years, is a significant addition to the squad.
More arrivals are expected as Jamshedpur aim to return to their best form, reminiscent of their title-winning season. However, the primary goal will be to finish in the top six and reach the knockout rounds, and they are certainly building a squad capable of achieving that.
