NorthEast United FC have signed Spanish forward Guillermo Fernandez Hierro, the club officially announced on Sunday, July 7. The 31-year-old has represented several Spanish clubs in his career so far including the likes of Athletic Bilbao, CD Leganes, and Elche.
His recent stint was with the Spanish third-tier outfit CyD Leonesa whom he joined in July last year. Given his goal-scoring credentials and immense experience in Spain, Guillermo Fernandez Hierro's arrival will be a major boost for the Highlanders' attack. Excited about his new adventure in the ISL, the Spaniard said (via Khel Now),
"I am very excited to work with the team and coaching staff. The club has shown faith in me, and I am ready to repay them and set my mark in the Indian Super League."

NorthEast United FC finished seventh in the 2023-24 ISL points table with 26 points from 22 matches thereby missing out on the playoffs spot. Although the club failed to reach the knockouts during the 2024 Indian Super Cup, they made it to the semifinals at the 2023 Durand Cup where they lost against the eventual runners-up East Bengal FC.
Welcoming the club's new signing, NorthEast United FC head coach Juan Pedro Benali not only heaped praise on the player but also opened up by saying,
"Guillermo is a very experienced professional; his career says it all. He will give us the much-needed boost in our attack, and we are happy to have him here."
The CEO of the club, Mr. Mandar Tamhane was equally elated while officially announcing the signing of Guillermo Fernandez Hierro whom he feels will catalyze the entire squad. Tamhane asserted,
"We feel we have got the right fit for our team. Guillermo has played at the top level of football in Europe, his expertise will not only bolster our attack but also serve as a catalyst for growth and development for our entire squad."
NorthEast United FC have so far roped in defensive midfielder Mayakkannan Muthu and centre forward Alfred Lalruotsang. They are expected to further strengthen their squad with some major signings ahead of the upcoming 2024-25 season of Indian football.
