Jamshedpur FC forward Daniel Chima Chukwu is all set to sign for Chennaiyin FC for the upcoming season of Indian football, according to Khel Now. Despite attracting interest from several clubs, the 33-year-old seems to be heading towards the Marina Arena for the 2024-25 season. He will be a free agent with his current contract expiring in May 2024.
Having joined Jamshedpur FC from East Bengal FC in January 2022, Chima was a part of the victorious Red Miners squad that went on to clinch the 2021-22 ISL League Winners' Shield. He made an instant impact at Jamshedpur under Owen Coyle, contributing seven goals and an assist in 11 matches he played having joined the club during the January transfer window.
In the 55 matches he has played for Jamshedpur FC, Daniel Chima Chukwu has 21 goals and four assists to his name. The Nigerian will be reuniting with his former gaffer upon joining Chennaiyin FC and their combo is something the fans would be excited to witness.
About the potential signing, a source opened up saying (via Khel Now):
“Chima had offers from several clubs, but the presence of Owen Coyle once again proved pivotal in Chennaiyin FC’s favour, as terms have been agreed with the forward.”
Can Chennaiyin FC go one step ahead under Owen Coyle and clinch their third ISL title?
Thanks to the dramatic turnaround in their fortunes towards the end of the league stage, Chennaiyin FC have qualified for the ongoing 2023-24 ISL season's playoffs by finishing sixth on the points table. They will be facing FC Goa on Saturday, April 20, for a place in the semi-finals.
It was Owen Coyle who guided the two-time ISL winners to their previous knockout appearance during the 2019-20 ISL where they eventually finished as runners-up. Once again, it is that man who has taken them to the playoffs when no one gave them a chance of making it given the poor start they have had to this campaign.
But this time, they will be hoping to go one step ahead and clinch the title which they unfortunately missed out on during the 2019-20 edition. Meanwhile, Jamshedpur FC failed to qualify for this season's playoffs having finished eleventh in the standings.
