IndyCar is undergoing a multi-faceted change for the 2025 season. The top class of American open-wheel racing will switch broadcasting partners from NBC to FOX, witness hybrid power units in play for a full season, and welcome an 11th team to the grid in PREMA Racing.

Additionally, history waits to be rewritten as Josef Newgarden will aim to win an unprecedented third consecutive Indy 500 while defending champ Alex Palou will shoot for this third consecutive championship (and fourth overall). However, on the other end of this spectrum lie a few drivers whose contracts end after this season and could potentially bid goodbye to IndyCar.

Let us take a look at three such drivers whose multi-year contracts exhaust after the season finale at the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix on August 31.

Three IndyCar superstars with contracts expiring at 2025 end

#3 Will Power - Team Penske

Will Power signed his current 'multiyear' contract with Team Penske in March 2023. Barring his rookie season with KV Racing Technology, the Australian driver has spent his entire IndyCar career with Team Penske and won two championships with it (2014, 2022).

As per IndyCar insider Tony Donohue, 2025 is the last year of Power's contract. Considering he turns 44 a day before the season opener, it could also be farewell for the No. 12 driver who has brought joy to millions of racing fans.

However, Power's performance is by no means dwindling with age. The Penske star finished an impressive fourth in the 2024 standings with a series-high three wins. After his win at Portland on August 26, he made it crystal clear that he has no plans of retiring (via Speedcafe):

"I want to continue. I’m not retiring. I’m not. I’m just simply not retiring."

If he still has fuel left in the tank to sustain his form, the Roger Penske-led Team Penske could sign him for another year or two.

#2 Scott Dixon - Chip Ganassi Racing

Scott Dixon signed his current multi-year contract with Chip Ganassi Racing in March 2022. The six-time champion has raced for the team for his entire 22-year IndyCar career. Similar to Will Power, he is at retirement age and will turn 45 on July 22, between two race weekends in Toronto and Laguna Seca.

Dixon has been supremely loyal to CGR, also having raced for it at Daytona and in Le Mans. Its garage has been nothing short of his second home, as he described after signing his latest contract in 2022 (via Crash.net):

"This team has been like a family to me since way back in 2002, and I’m glad I’ll be here trying to fight for more wins, championships, and Indianapolis 500s for years to come."

2025 is understood to be the last year of his CGR contract. If this turns out to be his final year in IndyCar, the series owes him a memorable farewell for being the face of the series and the driver with the most championships ever.

#1 Scott McLaughlin - Team Penske

Scott McLaughlin entered IndyCar with Team Penske in 2021 on a two-year contract after winning three Supercars championships with it from 2018 to 2020. On September 7, 2022, the team announced a multi-year extension with him.

McLaughlin credited Roger Penske and the team for making his dream come true and held up his side of the bargain to consistently finish third in the standings in 2023 and 2024. The last season was his best. He took a series-high five poles, three wins, and led 637 laps.

The New Zealand driver's contract will reportedly end at the end of the 2025 season. However, considering his fiery performances and consistency, it is highly likely he'll land a renewal during the season.
