Four-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves once interviewed NASCAR legend Clint Bowyer and the two had a hilarious interaction. The interview took place at the end of the 2023 edition of the Superstar Racing Experience, a stock car racing series co-owned by Tony Stewart.
Legends from different motorsports disciplines have sometimes competed against each other, making for a great spectacle for fans. SRX Racing is a series that features such spectacles. Founded by Tony Stewart, Ray Evernham, Sandy Montag, and George Pyne, the event made its television debut in June 2021. The series was renewed for a second session in 2022 and its third season was aired in July 2023.
Former NASCAR driver Ryan Newman emerged victorious in the series' most recent season. SRX also features stars of the racing world interacting with one another. One such interaction happened after the 2023 season finale at the Lucas Oil Speedway when four-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves interviewed former NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Clint Bowyer.
Following Jonathan Davenport's win in the final race of the season, Castroneves, who finished ninth in the race, grabbed the mic. Known for his infectious personality, the Brazilian turned the spotlight on fifth-place finisher Clint Bowyer, injecting humor into the interview. Invited by the presenters after the race to "take it away," Castroneves said,
"I think I did pretty well, man; I'm last and last. Let me tell you, I feel like I'm dancing in the mud right now."
Pulling Bowyer into the camera's view, Castroneves said,
"You gotta teach me something here man. I have no idea what I'm doing around here."
To which, Clint Bowyer replied:
"You want to dance with the stars, you got to get to get the breakdancing on them paddles buddy. It's right here, it's in those two right here."
Castroneves, in his usual animated style, continued with a question:
"Which line is better, high or low?"
Clint said,
"I'll tell you what, just go over there and nod."
Helio Castroneves, seemingly confused, replied:
"Alright. I have no idea what that means."
When did Helio Castroneves last compete in IndyCar?
Beyond being a four-time Indianapolis 500 winner, Helio Castroneves is also a three-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner. The Brazilian legend won the Le Mans race three times in a row from 2021 to 2023, in his late 40s at the time.
Now 49, Castroneves has taken a back seat when it comes to racing action. The Brazilian stepped back from full-time IndyCar racing at the start of the 2024 season, as he became a minority partner in the Meyer Shank Racing ownership group and took on the role of driver coach.
Although Castroneves handed over full-time driving duties to IMSA star Tom Blomqvist, he continued to compete in the Indianapolis 500 in MSR’s third car, qualifying and finishing 20th in 2024. Later that season, he temporarily returned to the cockpit, replacing Blomqvist at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix and the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America. He finished 25th and 19th in the two races, respectively.
