Known as the NTT IndyCar Series, the IndyCar Series is the top American open-wheel car racing class in the US. Tony George, the owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the time, founded the IndyCar, LLC, the series' parent organization, as a rival to CART, and it began as the Indy Racing League in 1996. Both series combined, and their histories and statistics were also combined. The Indianapolis 500 is the primary event and the first race of the IndyCar series.
Honda and Chevrolet serve as the manufacturers of the chosen teams and supply them with various engines. The engines are now DOHC 2.2-liter twin-turbo V6 engines with four-stroke piston Otto cycles, which are fuel-efficient and produce between 550 and 750 horsepower. Firestone, a tire supplier for the series since the 1996 season and the sole supplier since the 2000 season, manufactures the tires for the teams. From 1996 to 1999, Goodyear, which supplies tires to NASCAR, also supplied tires to the IndyCar Series.
