IndyCar champ Josef Newgarden subtly showed off his priceless Rolex Daytona watch on social media. The two-time defending Indy 500 winner earned the watch, a badge of honor in the motorsport world, after winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona with Porsche Penske Motorsport in January this year.
On Tuesday, December 24, Newgarden shared an Instagram story from Kisser Restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee, posing with a sandwich. The Team Penske driver's Rolex Daytona watch of Rolesor specification jutted out from beneath his black full-sleeved sweatshirt.
Rolesor is Rolex's term to define the combination of gold and steel on the brand's luxury watches, giving it a two-tone look. Newgarden tagged Kisser Restaurant and wrote:
"Just had a food awakening."
Josef Newgarden's Rolex 24 at Daytona victory came after teammate Felipe Nasr took the chequered flag in the winning No. 7, also driven by Dane Cameron and Matt Campbell at the 24-hour endurance event. Reflecting on the win, team owner Penske said (via NBC):
"Last year at Le Mans, we stumbled and we had some good runs last year, but to come back here and have both cars run for 24 hours and then win the race, it’s hard for me to believe it," Penske said. "I’ll tell you, this goes down as one of the biggest wins we’ve had. Now we have to go for the big one at Le Mans, you know that."
The win marked team owner Roger Penske's first overall victory since 1969.
Josef Newgarden humbly credited his Porsche Penske teammates after converting Daytona dream into reality
Josef Newgarden made his Sportscar debut in the LMP2 class at the 24 hours of Daytona in 2023 with his IndyCar teammate Scott McLaughlin. They drove for Tower Motorsports and finished 5th in the race.
In December 2023, a month before his second Rolex 24 at Daytona, but in the GTP category this time around, Newgarden expressed his desire to win a major endurance event. He said (via Motorsport):
"I know the team is very eager to add to what they did in the inaugural season. Winning Daytona would be a big deal for everybody. The challenge of being successful over 24 hours is one I’m not used to, so I’d love to succeed at that."
Josef Newgarden turned this dream into reality on January 28, becoming only the 16th driver to win the Indy 500 and the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Post-race, the Tennessee native appreciated his teammates for doing the heavy lifting in the race.
"I just showed up," he said. "Porsche and Team Penske, they delivered the biggest result. But Felipe, the way he drove at the end, and Matt Campbell, these guys won this race. I was just happy to be here. What an unbelievable group. They’re going to cherish this for a long time."
Four months later, Newgarden won his second consecutive Indy 500, immortalizing his face on the Borg-Warner trophy for the second time. The No. 2 Team Penske Chevy driver finished the season in eighth place in the standings with two wins, two poles, and seven Top 5 finishes.
