Former Formula 1 driver Logan Sargeant was optimistic of his future prospects as he hit the IndyCar tracks for the first time on Tuesday at The Thermal Club. The American racer took the wheels of Meyer Shank Racing's No. 06 Honda.
Former Williams F1 driver Sargeant has faced a turbulent 2024. In a dramatic turn of events, the 23-year-old was dropped by Williams midway through the 2024 Formula 1 campaign, as Argentine prospect Franco Colapinto replaced him.
Sargeant has since been exploring his options. The Florida native recently returned to open-wheel racing, taking the wheels of the No. 06 Honda for MSR in the NTT IndyCar Series off-season.
Driving the Dallara DW12 chassis, Sargeant wasted no time showcasing his skills. In a field of six cars, he set the second-fastest lap in the three-hour morning session and topped the time sheets early in the afternoon outing.
Following the race, Sargeant expressed optimism about the possibility of competing in IndyCar.
"If there was an opportunity there to jump into a car, I would definitely do it. I had a good time working with the MSR guys; it’s just such a good atmosphere, such a different atmosphere. This was much more enjoyable than the things that I’ve experienced in the past — just easier and a bit more fun to connect with all the people in the team. I had a good time meeting them, working with them and I think that was also felt on the other side. No doubt it was an enjoyable experience," Logan Sargeant said (via RACER).
MSR team owner reacts to Logan Sargeant's IndyCar debut
MSR team owner Mike Shank echoed Sargeant’s enthusiasm, praising the young driver’s performance and work ethic. Shank said (via Speedway Digest):
"The goal was to have a look at him [Logan Sargeant]. We've always felt that he deserves a shot at something over here, whether it's in INDYCAR or GTP or whatever the future may hold. We went ahead and had a good, strong look at him. He's one of those top F2 guys and he got his shot at F1 and now he has a shot at INDYCAR and we really wanted to see what he was all about."
While Logan Sargeant’s IndyCar debut was promising, the path to securing a full-time seat in the series remains challenging. With only four seats left to fill for the 2025 season, and just one offering compensation at a level suitable for a driver of Sargeant’s caliber, his chances of landing a spot on the grid are slim.
