Pato O'Ward says an F1 seat "is out of his hands"
Pato O'Ward fulfills the duties of the reserve driver for McLaren's F1 team. The Mexican had the opportunity to drive at the 2024 Mexican GP during the FP1 session.
O'Ward recently opened up on why the F1 seat is "out of his hands" while highlighting the pay-to-play nature of F1.
He said (via mediatiempo.com),
“Formula 1 is out of my hands. Every time I get in the car, the team understands and knows that I am capable of giving them the results that I have given them in IndyCar, the same will be true in Formula 1. At the end of the day it is still a car with four wheels. It is a world with a lot of politics. I don't have 30 million dollars that I can offer to get a seat. I understand that there is a point where many teams focus on that” (translated from Spanish).
The British driver Lando Norris and the Australian driver Oscar Piastri have signed long-term contracts with McLaren F1.
