Colton Herta recently opened up on the aspect of his race craft he wants to work on during the off-season. During an interview with James Hinchcliffe on Season In Review, Herta acknowledged his weak spot as a racecar driver.
Hinchcliffe mentioned how Herta was slowly making a name for himself as someone who can make 'big comebacks' from 17 or even 20 spots up. After that, he jokingly asked Colton Herta if he had considered qualifying better and trying to win races from the front.
"That's an interesting take and it's definitely something that we'll roll into the offseason and look at. It was a bizarre year because I think for the most part in the previous years look at it qualifying has probably been my stronger suit compared to the racing and then it's flip-flop. When you qualify well it's hard to do better in the race when you qualify at back, there work a lot better it's a lot easier to look good," Herta responded. [5:20]
Having said that, it's worth mentioning that Colton Herta's win at Toronto earlier this year came from a pole position.
The Toronto win was his first in 40 races, which not only broke his winless streak but also inspired him to finish inside the top-5, along with scoring a win in four of the next five races.
Colton Herta opens up on his off-season plans
Further in his conversation with James Hinchcliffe, Colton Herta opened up on his off-season plans. Herta said that he appreciated the time off, given the amount of time one has to invest in a full-time IndyCar season.
"I'll probably spend a month of not doing anything and then get back to work. We'll have some testing. I have a tire test later in the year that I'm looking forward to. We have Petite Le Mans. So yeah, I like to take my time off and enjoy it," Herta said [10:45]
But having said that, he mentioned that the only problem with extended breaks was that he tended to get 'bored' after a month, and would be itching to get back into the car. As he was unsure of his off-season plans and didn't have any vacation plans lined up, Herta said he was going to be very 'open-minded' about what he'd do during the off-season.
Regarding his contract in the IMSA, Colton Herta revealed that the IMSA world is 'different' than IndyCar because of their relatively shorter off-season. He touched upon IMSA staying busy in the off-season as they test in that time.
With that said, he acknowledged that he doesn't have an IMSA deal for 2025 so far, but is currently working on it in order to get back in the field for the upcoming season.
