Louis Foster impressed during the 2024 Indy NXT season, on the back of which he landed a full-time 2025 IndyCar seat for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Ahead of his debut IndyCar season, the British driver reflected on his record-breaking season in the junior series.
2024 was Foster's sophomore year in the Indy NXT, the topmost rung of the IndyCar ladder series. Driving for Andretti Global, he quadrupled his win rate from 2023 with eight race wins. The Briton took seven pole positions this season and stood on the podium for 12 out of 14 races.
Looking back at his dominant championship victory, Foster conveyed his feelings to BRDC SuperStars, a British racing development program of which he was a part, and said:
"The goal going in was the championship, and to win it in such dominant fashion was the icing on the cake."
He shared this post on his Instagram story to thank his fans in the UK and wrote:
"Great support as always all year from back home 🇬🇧"
Foster won the championship by taking a lights-to-flag victory at the Milwaukee 100, the penultimate race of the season. Andretti Global's then-CEO, Michael Andretti, showered praise on his star driver and commended the team for an all-round effort. The IndyCar legend said (via Andretti Global):
"Louis has just been unstoppable this season and it’s been a lot of fun to watch him dominate weekend after weekend. Our INDY NXT program is so strong, I think we’re on a 20-race podium streak over the last two seasons, and I’m proud of what that group has been able to accomplish this season across the board. I’m looking forward to seeing that sixth INDY NXT by Firestone Series Championship banner hanging in our shop soon."
The 21-year-old driver, who in 2022, after winning the Indy Pro 2000 championship with Exclusive Autosport had envisioned stepping up to IndyCar in 2024, finally gets his dream come true, albeit a year later.
Louis Foster faces early challenge with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing ahead of IndyCar debut
For Rahal Letterman Lanigan's co-owner Bobby Rahal, signing Louis Foster was a straightforward decision after such an impressive Indy NXT season. Adding young blood to the team, which already has a supremely experienced driver in Graham Rahal, was pivotal to Bobby Rahal's plan.
In mid-November, Foster underwent his first IndyCar test with RLL at the Thermal Club circuit in California. Though it was a good first day getting a taste of IndyCar operations for him, he faced some issues with the balance of his car.
"We had quite different run plans than everyone (the other five drivers testing)," the Briton said (via Divebomb). "But it was a good day. We learned a lot about the team. We definitely faced some issues with the balance... We did a lot of laps, and I enjoyed it. It was my first time out properly in an IndyCar. It was fun."
Louis Foster will line up alongside his teammates, Graham Rahal and the newly signed Devlin DeFrancesco, for the first time at the 2025 IndyCar season opener in St. Petersburg on March 2.
