During a 2021 interview, Lando Norris opened up about his aspirations for Indy 500. The McLaren driver, who emerged as the prime candidate to challenge Max Verstappen's dominance in F1, expressed his ambition to race in one of the most prestigious events in all of motorsports.
Norris admitted that he watched the Indy 500 every year, which generally takes place around the F1 weekend in Monaco. In fact, the McLaren driver admitted to having a keen interest in watching 'as many of the IndyCar races' as he can.
Having said that, Norris clarified that running in the IndyCar or the 500 wasn't on his priorities list at that time. He said, via Racer:
"At the moment it’s not something I want to go and do right now, I’d rather just focus on (F1), but it’s something to think about in the future. I would love to do it at some point, but not at the moment."
Norris further compared what makes winning the Indy 500 stand apart from the Monaco GP. He claimed that a large part of winning at Monaco is the historical aspect of it. But winning on the street circuit doesn't take 'anything incredible.'
But in the case of winning the 500, Lando Norris said:
“(At) Indy, you have to do something more incredible to win with your strategy, your fuel, and things like that. Monaco not so much, but what makes it special is the history of Monaco. I’m not as much of a fan of the history of the sport, but you just want to win because it’s Monaco."
Norris deemed the Indy 500 as more of 'a prestigious event' fans look forward to because of its uniqueness from other forms of racing. With that said, he emphasized that racing in the 500 is something he'd 'like to do' in the future.
Lando Norris proved his talent behind the wheel in front of IndyCar regulars in an iRacing race back in 2020
In an IndyCar iRacing race at Circuit of the Americas in 2020, Lando Norris converted his pole position start to a win in front of regulars like Pato O'Ward. His win came in front of an audience of 20,000 on the stream.
And speaking about racing against Arrow McLaren's O'Ward and his challenge towards the end, the British F1 driver said:
“It was a tough race especially Pato chasing me down on new tires at the end. I didn’t think I’d get back to the front after that spin.”
The young IndyCar driver also praised Norris, deeming him a driver who is 'quick in the SIM.'
With Lando Norris' win, Arrow McLaren snapped Team Penske's winning streak of three races on iRacing.
