The Larry Foyt-led A.J. Foyt Racing last won the Indy 500 before the dawn of the 21st century in 1999 at the hand of Swedish driver Kenny Brack. The team has only won two races since the last Indy 500 triumph and the last one came over a decade ago in 2013. AFR team principal Foyt recently came out to speak about his Indy 500 ambition while revealing the emotions behind the same.
Larry, grandson of former IndyCar champion A.J., appeared on the EPARTRADE YouTube channel for an exclusive interview. The host questioned Foyt about his team's Indy 500 ambitions as he highlighted how Santino Ferrucci has performed exceptionally well at the greatest spectacle in motor racing in recent years.
"Santino [Ferrucci] is just really smart about that race. He understands the last 50 laps are what matters, and we've had good speed, and David [Malukas] should be good there as well. Man, everything's got to go your way that day at Indianapolis and hitting everything right, hitting the weather right, and the downforce levels,” Larry Foyt said. (11:05 onwards)
“Everything just has to go well and But, yeah, no, again, that's the one, right? That's the one you want to win? That's the one I want to win for dad and for our team, and just to be able to do that again would be huge for us and our organization.”
Tony Kanaan, former driver for A.J. Foyt had the last golden opportunity to win the Indy 500 for the team. The Brazilian inherited the lead of the greatest spectacle in racing on Lap 64 at the 102nd Indy 500 in 2018 and led the race for 19 laps before a flat tire put him out of contention for the win.
Larry Foyt addresses the rumor of David Malukas moving to Team Penske
David Malukas moved to A.J. Foyt Racing for the 2025 IndyCar season and will be driving the #41 Chevrolet. AFR entered a technical partnership with Team Penske in 2023. Malukas is only 23-years-old and has shown glimpses of a future talent, including two podium finishes at Gateway Motorsports Park. The AFR driver is rumored to be a target for Team Penske and Larry Foyt addressed the same.
“Obviously, the Penske organization has a lot of people that have a lot of success in this industry. So when I'm looking at drivers too, I certainly run things by them because I want to know their feedback. So obviously, they were very high on Malukas. But shoot, I'll try to keep him, right? If we're going good, certainly, I would try to keep him,” Larry Foyt said via EPARTRADE. (7:10 onwards)
“They've got drivers coming up in contract years and things like that, but I don't think they've made any decisions that they're certainly moving on from anybody," he added.
In November 2024, A.J. Foyt Racing announced the departure of Technical Director Michael Cannon, who later joined PREMA. However, Foyt isn't in a hurry to fill the role as he suggested that they're covered, thanks to the technical partnership with Team Penske.
