Tony Kanaan has become a seasoned sim racer after building his own sim racing headquarters in 2023 that keeps undergoing changes to remain up to date. However, even an IndyCar champion can sometimes have a mishap, as he did recently while his son looked on in concern.
Kanaan, the deputy Team Principal of Arrow McLaren, shared a short video of the in-game incident on Instagram where he crashed into a truck while playing Euro Truck Simulator on his sim setup. As he went to adjust the mic on his headphones, he missed a truck in front of him slowing down and couldn't react in time to steer out of the way.
His youngest son, Max, who watched the hilarity play out, asked out of concern:
"Dad, are you okay?"
Kanaan immediately assured Max that everything was okay, but couldn't control his laughter at the situation.
Tony Kanaan has four children - a son, Leo (16), with his ex-wife Daniela, and three - Deco (9), Max (7), and Nina (6) - with his current wife Lauren. He prides himself on his fatherhood skills, and in the past, has revealed how passionately he parents each of his four children. In 2019, the Brazilian said (via IndyCar):
"Especially when you have more than one (children), you try to divide, not doing everybody together all the time, individually taking alone time with you, you and you. They’re all different. They all have different desires and interests. That’s just one thing I try to do the most, alone time with each of them."
Earlier this week, Tony and Lauren took their children to meet Santa at 'Santa's Magic Cottage' at the Indianapolis Zoo for the second year in a row. He shared a video of their mini-Christmas trip on Instagram and captioned it:
"Had a magical day with my family visiting Santa at the @indianapoliszoo! We all shared our gift wishes, and the smiles on the kids’ faces were priceless.🥰🎄🎅🏻"
Tony Kanaan carried on his parents' legacy with their family dinner tradition
Tony Kanaan got married to his wife Lauren Bohlander in 2013, the year he won his only Indy 500. His IndyCar career was still at its peak and he had less time to spend with his family, and Lauren did most of the heavy lifting at home, which he remains deeply grateful for.
In 2019, he revealed how he carried on his father's tradition of the whole family having dinner together.
"One thing that dad did a lot was dinner. Everybody has dinner together, everybody sits at the table together. I remember because we wouldn’t start having dinner until dad got home from work. He’d get home, everybody would sit at the table, we’d laugh and talk about the day, so that’s something I do," Tony Kanaan said (via IndyCar).
His father was in a similar situation as him - traveling a lot. And family dinner became the glue that held them together. Tony Kanaan's biggest parenting goal is for his children to view him as a parent who always gives his best, irrespective of situational outcomes.
Professionally, as he marches towards 2025, the Arrow McLaren boss aims to steer the team to its first IndyCar championship, drawing inspiration from McLaren winning the F1 constructors' championship this year.
