As Dabang Delhi prepare to take the court against the Bengaluru Bulls later tonight, Head Coach Honnappa C Gowda flew to Kuala Lumpur to receive an honorary doctorate for his contribution to kabaddi and the world of sports in general. The Global University of Choice – MSU (Management and Science University) awarded him the PhD.
Hailing from Karnataka, he played the sport with great distinction before taking up coaching around a decade back. Participation in an astonishing 17 straight Senior Nationals is a testament to the statement. Internationally, he ended up winning multiple titles at the international level, most notably a gold at the Asian Games, 2 at the SAFF Games and 3 at the Asian Championships.
While contacted about his achievement, Gowda seemed ecstatic, “It’s a great honour for me to be bestowed with this degree. Kabaddi is my life and to be recognized for my services to the game is massively satisfying.”
Explaining how it feels special to be remembered after retirement, he exclaimed, “People tend to forget you after you are done playing; while getting the Arjuna Award made me feel on top of the world, this fills me up with gratitude too.”
The curious us got him to talk about the game and if the team would miss his presence. He nonchalantly played that down, “The boys are doing really well, I am there just to support them anyway. If all goes well, by the time I am back, we would have listed our 3rd straight win.”
