Ajit Chouhan, U Mumba’s 19-year-old raider, has been one of the breakout stars of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) 2024. With 91 raid points in 10 matches (as of November 15), Ajit currently sits fourth in the list of top raiders in his debut PKL season.
In this short span, Ajit has already faced two of the most lethal defenders in the league: Iran’s legendary left corners, Sultan Fazel Atrachali and Showstopper Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh.
Ajit faced Fazel Atrachali during U Mumba’s 31-31 tie with Bengal Warriorz earlier this season. Despite his best efforts, Ajit found it tough to break through Bengal’s defense, led by their captain Fazel. In the match, Ajit managed to score only two raid points and was tackled once by the veteran defender.
However, it was his face-off against Haryana Steelers’ Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh that became one of the most talked-about battles of the season. Ajit had a great outing that night, taking 17 raid points which included getting the better of Shadloui twice.
U Mumba were in good lead courtesy of Ajit’s heroics; however, Shadloui had other plans. The Iranian tackled down Ajit three times in reply to not only win the individual battle 3-2 but also help Haryana make a comeback and win the match 48-39.
In an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda, Ajit Chouhan picked his favorite defender between the two Iranian superstars.
“Raiding against Shadloui was very difficult. His defense is extremely strong, and he is physically powerful. Fazel Atrachali is also an excellent defender, but I think Shadloui is the best. There isn’t much difference between them—they both have power, skills, and everything a defender needs. However, Shadloui is faster, especially when he moves backward, whereas Fazel is a little slower in comparison,” Ajit explained.
Who is Ajit Chouhan’s inspiration in the Pro Kabaddi League?
Ajit Chouhan has been exceptional with his quick feet and bonuses. When asked about his inspiration, the youngster said that he loves none other than Anup Kumar. Anup is a veteran of PKL, popularly known as “Bonus ka Badshah” and “Captain Cool”.
He was U Mumba’s lead raider and skipper in the initial seasons and helped the team qualify for the finals in the first three seasons, which included a title-winning run in Season 2.
“Anup Kumar is my only favorite player. I’ve learned everything, including bonus points, by watching him. I really like him. I watched him a lot during Season 2, especially when he helped U Mumba win the trophy,” Ajit shared.
Taking cues from his idol, Ajit has seamlessly transitioned into U Mumba’s lead raider role. Despite being in his first season, he has taken on the responsibility with confidence and poise.
“I feel good being the lead raider for U Mumba. It’s my first season, so I don’t have much experience, but I’m managing to play well,” he added.
Ajit was initially expected to play a supporting role to senior raiders Amirmohammad Zafardanesh and Manjeet. However, with both struggling for form, Ajit has stepped up to fill the void.
“There’s nothing wrong with Amirmohammad Zafardanesh and Manjeet. They will definitely make a strong comeback. They are excellent players, but their performance hasn’t been great recently. However, they have been contributing in defense, even if they aren’t scoring raid points,” Ajit said.
Ajit also emphasized the importance of raiders contributing in defense:
“When raiders contribute in defense, it benefits the team a lot. Usually, the opponent raider focuses on the corner defenders, expecting an ankle hold. But they don’t pay much attention to the supporting defenders. So, when the helpers step in and execute an ankle hold, the chances of getting the opponent out are much higher.”
Ajit's prediction seemed to bear fruit during U Mumba’s thrilling 35-32 win against Tamil Thalaivas, where Manjeet delivered eight raid points and two tackles, signaling a much-needed return to form.
