In their inaugural match of the ongoing Star Sports Pro Kabaddi Season 2, Dabang Delhi were crushed by the Telegu Titans. In what was an extraordinary display by the team from Hyderabad, contributions by 2 of their foreign recruits – Meraj Sheykh and Hadi Oshtorak from Iran stood out. Having excelled at the international level before and being the highest paid players in the league; it came as no surprise that together they strangled the Dabang raiders and made point-scoring excruciating for them.
The performance of the aforementioned was in stark contrast to their opponents who didn’t field any of their 4 contracted foreigners. On further introspection, we were told that two of them – Takamitsu Kono and Yosuke Sasaki still hadn’t arrived and were expected soon. One other – Korean Dong Ju Hong reached a day before the opener, not quite the ideal preparation, is it?
Coach Honnappa C Gowda played it down though, “They are good players but for it’s difficult for them to find a place in the starting line-up. The crux of our team is made of locals and we are going to retain that. I am sure it’s a great experience for them but it’s a competitive tournament and we can’t afford to field anything but our best.”
Nepal’s Jay Bahadur sounded upbeat about getting some much needed playing time though, “I have been with the team for 3 weeks now and hopefully will get my chance soon. These players are really good but I think, given an opportunity, I will do really well too. Also most of the Indians haven’t played against us, that might help our case.”
As he points out their inclusion might act as a surprise weapon, something the Dabangs are in dire need of, ahead of their 2nd match vs the Puneri Paltans in Kolkata today.
