Nice noise around the stadium. It doesn't feel muggy. We are not at maximum temperature. We are hovering around the minimum, around the 30s. We are just about in the middle. 60 and 61 metres on each side and 73 metres straight is the big hit. Not surprised by the toss. It's a drier surface so New Zealand would want to go a bit harder. The ball has come on quickly in the powerplay of the second innings. So New Zealand will have to be careful. The average score here is 127 but in a final, it could be 140.

Commentary

So that's it. Spare a thought (and not a sympathetic one, but a one of admiration) for South Africa. They gave it their all. They came here with a beautiful story. They did the impossible by beating Australia. The dream was so close for them but it just didn't happen on the day. New Zealand were too good and refused to be beaten. Spare a thought for Kapp. She deserved it as much as Bates, Devine and Tahuhu. But hopefully she'd be able to get courage to think that she has done her part in building what's a superb team which will surely win a trophy sooner than later.

A World Cup has come to an end. And it'll travel all the way to New Zealand. More than anything, it would have inspired perhaps at least 15 other little girls to take up this sport, told them that if you just keep at it, if you just work hard enough you can get the world on your feet. Just for that, you can call it successful. It's time for a big party in New Zealand. They have shown that their past was and their present is as bright as their future would be. They have shown the fight of a Kiwi player at the biggest stage. They are the deserved, exemplary champions of the world.

Lots of photographs being clicked as the New Zealand players capture memories for a lifetime. And of course, this whole tournament has been one full of memories. It's time to have a quick recap of it all then...

It began with uncertainty of course owing to the political situation in Bangladesh. The BCB eventually hosted the tournament in the UAE with Dubai and Sharjah finalized as the venues. Bangladesh flagged off the tournament with a win over Scotland, who made their debut in the Women's T20 World Cup to create history. Pakistan turned in a strong showing of their own against Sri Lanka to throw Group A - the group of death - wide open. New Zealand then handed India a hammering to open up a number of permutations and combinations early in the competition.

It wasn't a tournament for big sixes but one batter who certainly had no issues with that was Deandra Dottin, who picked up from where she left off having marked her return to international cricket from retirement. The West Indies put up a show of some kind with Qiana Joseph and Hayley Matthews lighting up their campaign. Of course, Australia did what Australia do best - dominate opposition units at will even as they hit a couple of stumbling blocks courtesy of some untimely injuries. Fatima Sana, the first-time captain of Pakistan, showed incredible fortitude in returning for her team's must-win clash against New Zealand having flown back home at the demise of her father and her leadership and courageous attitude certainly was one of the highlights of the tournament.

But there were some incredible results too. England, who won their first three matches, were blown out of the water by the West Indies as they crashed out at the end of the group stage. India failed to progress to the semis too as West Indies and New Zealand defied the odds. They produced a cracking semifinal a day after Anneke Bosch landed a killer knockout punch to Australia as the six-time champions were stunned in Dubai.

For the first time in 15 years, we witnessed a final that did not feature Australia but it was a quality encounter no less with the Proteas and the White Ferns fighting tooth and nail. Eventually, it was New Zealand who capped off a red-letter day by lifting their first ever Women's T20 World Cup title in front of a packed crowd in Dubai. A high-quality tournament marked by high-quality performances - women's cricket was always here to stay and this competition has only swelled that narrative further!

And now, a beaming Sophie Devine walks up to the dais to collect the T20 World Cup from Greg Barclay, the ICC Chair and a fellow Kiwi. He hands over the trophy to the winning captain and quickly hops off the dais before the players soak it in. Sophie Devine holds the trophy aloft as captain of a World Cup-winning team. Confetti all around as New Zealand bask in glory! They fell short in 2009 and 2010. But 2024 sticks to its theme of being a year of redemption for cricket teams around the world. The White Ferns add their own story to it! They are the champions and it goes without saying that these celebrations will go long and hard into the night!

Sophie Devine (New Zealand captain): Let me put my hand on the trophy and then we'll chat (about if it feels good). Allowed myself to dream a bit last night about what it would feel like holding that trophy. Unbelievable. It's been a long time between drinks for New Zealand. We've known what we have wanted to build for the last 12 months. Even when the results weren't going our way, we knew we were building the right way. We played two of the best teams in the world for two games in a row. You want momentum but we've rewritten it. Coming off 10 losses in a row but in a World Cup, everyone starts at zero. Outstanding, speaks volumes on who Suzz is as a player. She's now the most capped player for a reason. Amazing how she has played with such aggression and such fearlessness. It set the tone. Everyone knows how special I find Suzz. (On Tahuhu) I have spoken about it at length. Lea is the kind of person you want in your time. I knew she'd make something happen. She did just that. Not just wickets. She was fantastic today. (Would she give her captaincy decision a rethink?) No chance of changing my mind, I am done! Halliday was special. We have spoken about it at length. The running between the wickets, the pockets she hit was outstanding. We have spoken about putting in our efforts. We all know she's a once in a generation player (Kerr). Physically, to do what she did, I am pretty sure she can't feel her legs anymore. The person that she is, how caring she is, it's scary to think how good she could be. I want to thank Laura and the South African side, they were outstanding. Thanks to ICC, NZC and the families who made it here... (Crowd's cheers go louder) I think I am getting heckled!

And now, make way for the champions! LLLLLLLLLL is history now. It's a thing of the past as can be seen in the manner Suzie Bates leaps onto the podium with her arms aloft. Oh that feeling of being a world champion sure is something!

The champions receive their medals one by one and needless to say, they will treasure this for life. This is what they've been playing for and they have earned it after a campaign where they've defied odds aplenty to come up trumps as the world's best. It's been a complete team effort - every player has made her mark at some point in the tournament. That's the true hallmark of a champion outfit and this lot - especially the three grandmas as they call themselves will narrate stories about this journey to their grandkids years down the line!

Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa captain): We had a really good semifinal. We wanted to rest and not get too ahead of ourselves. We just didn't play our best cricket tonight. They really came at us hard in the powerplay. At first I thought we could ride the wave and pick up a few wickets. But we probably let them score too many. We need to have a good reflection of what exactly happened. Half-way, we were backing ourselves to chase 150-odd. Definitely thought it was game on after the powerplay. But they put on the squeeze. 7-11 was not our best phase. Credit to New Zealand. Very exciting (about the youngsters). We had experience in people like Kapp but also some youngsters who didn't play. We'll just keep building and hopefully have a good next World Cup. A really big thanks to our management. The hours and hours they spend, they don't get recognition for it. Also to the families who flew out, some last night. There were a lot of last minute visas. And also thanks to the CSA and ICC.

The runners-up, South Africa, will now collect their medals. Alas, it's two finals in a row now that they've fallen short. But this has been a magnificent campaign from Laura Wolvaardt and Co. Consistently good throughout their campaign with bat and ball as they finished second in Group B on net run-rate before dishing out a hammering to Australia. There are some very glum faces of course as they make their way up to receive their medals. They'd do anything to swap it for the World Cup. The wait continues, but this is a campaign they should be mighty proud of.

Now it's time for the match officials to receive their medals. Tough task officiating a high-pressure game like this but they've done a commendable job.

Time for the tournament presentation. First up, former Australian cricketer Lisa Sthalekar brings the T20 World Cup and places it on the presentation podium!

Amelia Kerr (Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament): I'm a little bit speechless and am so stoked to get the win considering what the team has been through. (The pitch) I thought it was pretty good but it slowed up a little bit. It wasn't coming onto the bat (after a point) so I thought 145 would have been a good score. (On Halliday's cameo) She took so much pressure off me. She just found the pockets. She did it in the semifinal and once again today. I wasn't cramping up while batting but afterwards while fielding I found myself cramping. The first ball I bowled I cramped up and thought I wasn't going to be able to bowl as fast today. But my wrong 'un coming into play here has had success. The other spinners did a great job too. Bowling's what first got me into the White Ferns and that's something I've always wanted to keep getting better at. This spin group we have, I've never enjoying bowling so much. That's always better when you get the big players out. You always want to be a big match player. Bowling in the middle-overs are when the best batters are constructing their innings so if you can make an impact there, it's great. I absolutely love it - I've played international cricket for a while. I've got to share the field with three of our greats but to share the experience with the young ones is a great feeling.

Amelia Kerr of New Zealand has been declared the Player of the Match for her all-round show. Having snared 15 wickets in the campaign, she is also the Player of the Tournament!

Georgia Plimmer: Been a bit of a ride over the last couple of years but it feels so amazing to come out on the right side now. I can't put it in words as to how much it means for this group. The legacy Bates has left not just for New Zealand cricket but world cricket is amazing. So blessed to be batting with her. Massive crowd - never played in front of a crowd like this. It was a privilege. Everyone's played a massive part in this victory.

Ben Sawyer (New Zealand coach): Really happy for the girls. They have executed the plans against one of the best teams in the world. We just spoke about how their best was good enough. As Sophie says, we can beat anyone. So it was about that reassurance. It's an absolute privilege to be involved with those three. They are greats of the game and they can say they are world champions.

Suzie Bates: Just in shock really. This tournament, a lot of things have gone our way and we played great as a side. Just that we won this game, it's unbelievable. I think we know South Africa were going to come hard when they got the opportunity to bat so we just wanted to take the game on. Not many expected us to get this far so we just wanted to play with freedom. Georgia Plimmer's a world champion at such a young age. She's such a talented player and she deserves it. (On that moment with Devine) We've been through it all. Such a special moment for us together. She's been so outstanding leading this team, so calm and believing in us. There have been some dark times that only we as a group know. It's so very special now. Eden Carson, outstanding all tournament. Our spinners - even though Melie has been around for a while she's so young, Fran Jones - it was a whole team effort. It just makes it so satisfying for you as an athlete.

Lea Tahuhu: Absolutely surreal. Just unbelievable. So so proud of this team and everything we've achieved over the past few months. Just puts all our hardwork into perspective. This team is so so special. I said during our first game that we wanted to do something special. Standing here now I want to say WOOHOO!

Brooke Halliday: The way we bowled especially after the powerplay was brilliant. Very proud - and shocked (grins).

Let's get some early reactions in!

Rosemary Mair: Pretty unbelievable to be honest. Coming into the tournament, all the odds were against us. To win the tournament is unbelievable. The batters put on a pretty fantastic total for us to defend. They got off to a great start in the powerplay. We just care so much about each other. We've been through a lot of lows in the last 18 months but we've stuck by each other. They're pretty old (laughs when asked about Devine, Bates and Tahuhu) having played the last final about 14 years ago. But we're very happy for them.

Izzy Gaze: It hasn't sunk in. It's incredible, I'm so happy for the team. (On the nick on Bosch's dismissal) I was pretty lucky I heard it and then I stuck to my gut (with the DRS). We've shown our skill and backed ourselves - look where we are! This is for them (the seniors) - this is their win.

From grandmothers to the grandwinners of the T20 World Cup!!!! Sophie Devine is a world champion. Suzie Bates is a world champion. Lea Tahuhu is a world champion. And so is all of New Zealand because of these 15 brave women who refused to give up, who refused to knock on the doors of the World Cup until the doors gave up and died wonderful deaths.

They came up to the tournament with 10 defeats hanging on their head. But they beat every side except Australia to reach the final. And now they have beaten the side that beat Australia to win the title. There are stories and then there's New Zealand's story. There are legends and then there's this mix of veterans and young kids building a world-beating family together!

No one kept them in the prediction for a final. Perhaps not even themselves. But as Devine has so often said, they stuck to their processes like rocks. They were ready to sink with those processes but instead they buoyed and have now reached the peak of peaks. These are the golden Kiwis of this generation and they'll be forever, and ever in the history of cricket!

It's tears and fireworks... the ever so beautiful combination of something special being written in this beautiful sport. This beautiful sport has decided to shine on New Zealand today and they are celebrating like they still can't believe what they have achieved. They give each other bear hugs and maybe small pinches in between.

New Zealand, quite simply, played the perfect game for a final. They began extremely well in the powerplay and built on that foundation with death overs assault to put up a winning total. And then, they bowled like it.

South Africa came like they wanted to take the game by the scruff of its neck and chase the above-par total in less than 20 overs. Wolvaardt was simply superb in the powerplay and they came through the first six unbeaten and quite unbothered.

Jonas came in and executed a good plan to get Bates out. But that didn't stop the Proteas. Bosch and the skipper kept running between the wickets and the required run-rate in check. Then Devine brought in an intervention that she'll remember for a long, long time.

Her good friend Tahuhu bowled a one-run ninth over. One-run! Wolvaardt took too much pressure on herself and NZ recognised it by bringing on Kerr who struck her out immediately and then got Bosch too on the last ball. The game slipped thick and fast from the hands after drinks and never came back.

With the famed top-three gone, New Zealand just kept it tight against the untested middle-order, giving nothing easy. The RRR built and built and the wickets, like they so often do, followed. No batter struck at more than 115 after that and that tells you all you need to know.

New Zealand also took all the chances in the field to put their name on the trophy with a margin of 32 runs.

Fireworks in the background as Sophie Devine soaks it in before embracing Suzie Bates - that's a long hug that sums up everything this duo has seen together. The dugout charges in and assistant coach Craig McMillan wears a massive smile on his face. Down but not out - written off by conjecture but determined as ever. The White Ferns have shown how it's done. From ten successive defeats before this tournament began, they have written themselves into cricketing folklore. Tears all around as the players soak in the feeling of being a world champion!

Coming to the delivery - it was full and wide of off stump and Mlaba could only jam her bat into the turf. Not a clean collect by Gaze but she can gaze at the T20 World Cup for as long as she wants. Sheer, raw emotion as New Zealand are crowned champions of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024!
